Adopting a cat or kitten is a huge commitment, how can I ensure that they are a good fit for my family and lifestyle?
Tails High offers a a Foster-To-Adopt program when there are special considerations for adding a new cat to your household. FTA allows you to do have adequate time for a staged introduction to the new kitty in your home with other pets or family members. This trial basis as a foster parent before finalizing the adoption can range from 14-30 days depending on what our Adoption Team recommends and approves. Foster-To-Adopt ensures the new kitty is a good fit for you and your family, your current pets, and the Tails High cat or kitten(s) you’ve selected. Our goal is to make every effort to match people with the cats or kittens that will develop a lifelong bond.
What costs are involved in adopting a cat from Tails High?
We provide age appropriate vet care for all of the cats and kittens in our care at the time of adoption. This can vary depending on if you are adopting a kitten, an adult or senior cat. In most cases, kitties are spayed/neutered, up to date on age appropriate vaccines (Rabies/FVRCP), FELV/FIV combo tested, given worm prevention and they have been microchipped. While we get the kitties off to their best start, we recommend our cats and kittens establish vet care once adopted within 60 days of going to their new home and provide the medical records to get set up with your primary vet.
What if I’m adopting my first pet?
Adopting a kitty is so exciting! Adopting a Tails High cat means you have us in your corner for the lifetime of your kitty. We are happy to provide recommendations and tips for getting prepared and answer questions as they arise, once you take your new cat or kitten home. We are always here to support our adopters, just like our fosters and volunteers.
How do I know what cat or kitten to adopt?
There are so many factors to consider when preparing to adopt. We believe every human to cat match is a unique opportunity and are here to guide the process once you submit your adoption application and are approved. If you aren’t sure what cat stands out to your when applying, you can leave that section blank and our Adoption Team will guide you to the best matches possible. Some factors to consider when looking at our available cats:
- Require less supervision – Older cats are less energetic than kittens in most cases and have had adequate time to learn appropriate behaviors. Kittens require kitten-proofing of your home and should have lots of dedicated human attention.
- It takes TWO – We require that kittens are adopted in pairs or go to a home with another cat or cats. If you want to adopt a kitten, you must be prepared for two kitties. Single Kitten Syndrome is one of the leading causes for kittens being returned to rescues and shelters. It’s so beneficial for them to have a playmate and will be much easier for you to manage over all. Plus, they have a best friend for life!
